2D Animation Evaluation

My 2D Animation Evaluation

For my 2D animation i created a Nickelodeon bumper, to advertise Nickelodeon; the purpose of this was so I could put this Nickelodeon sting before a programme actually starts. What I did to make my 2D animation was that I  printed off lots of different sea creatures, I made them swim in the way that they would in real life. I printed the pictures of all the sea creatures out, copied them onto a different piece of paper and coloured them in orange because this was  the theme colour in the main logo and I felt this colour needed to be in the animation.  I also added the character "SpongeBob SquarePants", this is so that it isn't just a bumper with different sea animals, I included this character from a show that was already on Nickelodeon which is why I included it in the bumper. The 2D animation was meant to be 15 - 30 seconds long and my animation was 24 seconds long.

I think that my animation could be improved because I felt like I rushed it, however my animation looked reasonably well and it actually looked like a nickelodeon sting in the completed version. I could of  improve my animation by making a little bit longer and looked less rushed, even though the sea animals looked like they were moving, if I had taken more shots it would of looked and ran a lot smoother. I feel the background colour was used really well in my animation, it looked like what the sea would actually looked like. Also throughout the animation i made the fishes eyes to make them look like they were actually blinking, and this made the fish looked alive and made the this a lot more effective.

The choice of sound effects I used were really good, I researched an old nickelodeon bumper and used the sound effects from that and put it in my own. I took out the sound effects that didn't fit the animation and it sounded much better. I did this on a piece of software called Final Cut Express. I have used this software before so I knew exactly what I needed to do. My job was to make the sound fit with my animation perfectly and I feel i tackled this challenge well. By  the end of the bumper, characters sing/chant "Nickelodeon" all at the same time, and when this happens the words Nickelodeon appear as the characters are singing. I managed to pick the perfect soundtrack to fit my animation and the length of the animation was surprisingly on point with the music; which I was really happy about.

Overall, what I liked most about my animation was when I pieced it all together in Final Cut Express. The music and the animation itself fit together perfectly. I could improve my animation by making it run a bit smoother, not rushing and making adding more characters to it. I chose to make a cut out animation because I couldn't really draw my animation out with the idea I had in mind. By cutting out characters and making them my own looked a lot better than what I think it would of looked like if I would of drew them. What was great about my 2D animation was that it fit all its requirements, the length and sound matched the criteria and the creativity and effectiveness and the time to make it look good, all came together to create my final completed version of the Nickelodeon bumper.

3D Animation Evaluation

For my 3D animation i created a an advertisement  advertising "Anti bullying week" and I made a clay animation. I created two butterflies they were twin like, and i also created another butterfly that looked different to the other butterflies. This one wanted to be like everyone else, even though he looked different he was still a butterfly but the twin like butterflies fly away and don't want anything to do with him. In the end a new butterflies towards him and he smiles and flies away with the butterfly and makes friends. The 3D animation was meant to be 15 - 30 seconds long and my animation was 24 seconds long so i reached and went over the minium time scale for my animation.

I think that my animation could be improved but i feel did the animation well, however i could of made the animation longer and less jumpy. The use of colour could of been used better on the background of my animation for example, when i put clouds into my animation some of the clouds got clay on them and this made them look dirty which made the animation looked of rushed. The animation lacked sound effects and i only added and instrumental song into it; I could of changed these things but i had a deadline to reach and i was already behind with creating both of my animations.

However what i liked about my animation was the bit where the butterfly started crying, i thought that this was really effective  and created and by doing this it made my animation looked so much better.  The animation included a zoom when the butterfly was crying and eventually zoomed to see that he was happy again. I also made the clouds move about a centimetre every time i took a shot, the clouds looked like they were moving across the sky throughout my animation, which made the butterflies were actually flying in the sky and also to show time passing by.

In summary, I feel i could of improved my animation by the choice of sound effects i used in final cut  and the colours and materials I used whilst creating it; However overall I made a good animation, I thought clearly about my advertisment and how i was going to advertise it. My animation included zooms and i thought about how my advertisment was going to be presented. It took a long time to create as to make an animation look realistic it does take a long period of time. For example one part that made my animation looked effective was that i made the butterflies eyes move; wherever one butterfly was going the main butterfly was following it. Overall i think that my advertisment did meet all its requirements including: length of animation, materials, creativity, effectiveness and good use of claymation.

Animation Proposal/3D

Working Title

Anti bullying week.

Medium to be used

I am going to draw the the characters for my advertisement so it will be a 2D drawn animation. The advertisement is going to have one butterfly with a broken wing and 2 other butterfly laughing at her. The butterfly with the broken wing will be sitting alone trying to 'fix it' while her friends take no notice of it. The butterfly then starts to cry because it isn't her fault that she is a different colour to everyone else. Another insect comes along and helps the butterfly to fix its wing; the butterfly then smiles and flies away with her new friend.

Intended Audience

The advertisement is aimed at young children as well as older teenagers. The reason why I have chosen to this is because the advertisement is mostly aimed at children that are still in secondary school.

Summary of Content

The idea i have for my animation is help stop bullying and racism, mainly for 'anti bulling' week.  Instead of using people i am going to create a drawn animation. The advertisement will be around 30 seconds long. The butterfly will look a bit different to the other butterflies and because of this the others insects don't like it and bully her for it.

Length or size of the product

The length of my advertisement will be around 30 seconds to a minute long.

Contemporary uses of animation

Music Video
The target audience for a music video will depend on what genre the music video. For example, One Direction and Justin Bieber would appeal to young girls so their music videos wont be as explicit as artists like Et the song. Some of his songs are to explicit for anyone younger than 15 to watch. Which is why the videos he makes are designed to target an older audience because the they would understand it more. One direction on the other hand make music videos that are suitable for a younger audience because they know there fans range from around from around 8 to 16years. So the music videos they make have to be designed for a younger audience.

Its rare to find a music video that uses different animation techniques as most of them involve actors telling s story, or the artist telling a story through his or her music video. Although, The music video to daft punk -  one more time features a band of blue aliens performing to an audience on their planet while a mysterious force approached them. The music video has scenes taken from a film called Intersella 5555, a Japanese anime film; the video acts a a visual realisation of discovery.

There are lots of different styles when it comes to creating a music video such as, performance videos, narrative, cameo and notion of looking. An example of a performance video mainly focuses on the artist or band, with them just performing either on their own or in front of a crowd. A band called Mumford and Sons created a a performance music video with there song 'I will wait';  as they performed in front of crowd throughout the duration of the song.

Advertising
The target audience for advertising a film or animation will depend when it is advertised and what channel you are advertising on. It is important for advertisers to advertise a film or animation at the right time and the right place For example, an advert about a children’s film like The Lego movie would be advertised on a kids television programme. An advert about a children’s film could be advertised on a children’s TV channel such as: cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, boomerang etc. An action film or horror could be advertised on Tv channels like ITV or channel 4. Films gernes that target an older audience would be advertised on TV in the mid evening schedule in between soap operas. The whole family at this time will be watching the TV and the target audience at this time would be potentially married or single people.

Television
The target audience for animation on television also depends on the show and channel that you are watching it from. For example on a kids TV channel like nickelodeon, There will be a number of different TV programmes that are aired on this channel, aimed at the target audience of around 12 and under. An example of an animation that nickelodeon air is a programme called spongebob squarepants. This programme is aimed at the target audience of around 10 years and under. The animation is all hand drawn, and is one of the most popular children's TV programme on Nickelodeon which is why it is still being aired today.

The animation techniques used to advertise the channel before adverts or before a programme is about to start are called stings. Cartoon Network have a sting before a show is about to start; one of the stings involved a motion graphic would appear in the middle right saying "Dont Move", "Stick Around", or "Right Back". When the show would come back from the break, it would show the bumper's behind the scenes in a fast forward motion with various tracks playing in the background. This is just an example of what cartoon networks stings are, the majority of channels use them before a show is about to start, a few examples of different childrens tv channels that do this are: Nickelodeon, boomerang, Disney Chanel etc.
The different styles used in children's television are

Film
Depending on the type of film will depend on the type of audience it is appealed to. For example usually, animated films appeal to a younger audience. Films such as toy story, Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc, all appeal to a younger audience; this is because there is no harsh language or anything unsuitable for children. Other films are different depending on the genre of the film. For example, the film Olympus has fallen is an action film and is designed to target an older audience; harsh language and fighting scenes are usually included in an action film.  Children under the age of twelve wouldn’t watch this type of film, so the target audience would change depending on the type of film it is.

There are different types of animation techniques for every film; for example the way would make the film snow white and the seven dwarfs would be different to how they would make Wallace and Gromit. In the film Wallace and Gromit involves using a lot of hand movements and use of Claymation in order to make the film. Where as in Snow White, the animation will be created using drawings and real life movements.
There are many different styles of animation used in film, the use of stop motion is used in films; Tim burton is a famous director and the majority of the films he direct, produce and write are stop motion films. Examples of some of his films that use stop motion are: Corpse Bride, The nightmare before Christmas and one of his most recent Frankenweenie. Other animation techniques include CGI, drawn animation etc.

To make a production for film is very similar in how you would a production for a TV programme. However creating a film would take a longer time to make. To make a good film you will need a producer and a director.
Like a TV programme, you will also need actors and actresses and if needed you will need to find extras. But, before even filming, you need a location and permission to use it. This will involve location agency’s, and for a film you will want to change locations if there specific bits of film you want but sets are created in studios for them to film and can be changed whenever you want. However this would take time so the film company will need to watch closely as it costs a lot of money. This is on major issue for film companies, for example, they could book a location for 3 hours and all the filming has to be done in the set time, otherwise it would cost extra to use the facilities

Digital and mobile.

Interactive media is when you talk or interact with someone or something. For example a computer game like grand theft auto or an app that guides you through something like learning a new language. Not all computer games are interactive, however consoles like the PlayStation 3 or the XBOX, have games especially made for interaction.

TV
TV is similar in the making of the production with film. Before making a production for TV you need to think of a number of different things. One thing you need to think about is how you are going to be able to fund it. The majority of TV programmes are funded by advertisements, for example ITV. Another thing you need to think about is what the show is going to be about, so cinematography is a huge thing to think about before the production even begins. Story boarding, planning, scripting are what you need to do in order to have a good quality show.  In order to create a TV production, you will also need to think about the target audience, who does it appeal to? Depending on what the TV programme is about, depends on what time the show is on the screens and when it is. For example, if the programme was a game show, then the show would appeal to families so it would be placed on TV screens at prime time, (between5 and 8). Obviously there are other important things in order to make a TV production like, location, casting, equipment and the staff involved.
